Messa così, sembra che il sistema scolastico inglese abbia fallito. In realtà, dopo essere passato di lavoro in lavoro, ha deciso di tornare a scuola e alla fine è diventato insegnante… e poi, naturalmente, scrittore.
Ha iniziato scrivendo canzoni per poi cimentarsi con il teatro e, infine, con il romanzo. Le sue opere teatrali sono perfette ricette inglesi: trattano temi sociali drammatici con una spolverata di sarcasmo e qualche goccia di arguto humour, una rimescolata di spirito nostalgico. Si tratta di ricette semplici ma cucinate con qualche rivisitazione alla tradizione.
Ha uno stile molto immediato, diretto: i suoi personaggi appartengono alla classe operaia ed il linguaggio riflette la loro condizione. Inizialmente sembrano sciocchi, incappano in buffe situazioni spesso a causa della loro ignoranza, mano a mano che la storia si sviluppa però emerge il loro lato umano, i personaggi si caricano di sfaccettature e consentono al lettore una totale identificazione.

If we put it that way, it looks like the English school system has failed. Actually, after changing several jobs, he decided to go back to school and in the end he became a teacher… and then a writer, of course. He started writing songs, then tried his hand at writing plays and finally novels. His plays are perfect English recipes: dealing with social issues with a sprinkle of sarcasm and some drops of witty humour, a stir of nostalgic spirit as a final touch. They are simple recipes cooked with a reinterpretation of tradition.
Russell’s style is instant, direct: his characters belong to the working class and their language is a consequence. They may seem foolish at first, they run into funny situations because of their ignorance but, as the story goes on, their human side emerges and they acquire multiple facets, until the reader ultimately identifies with them.
